The start of gay activism
An excessive amount of white collar workers arrive in the 1970s. Being a middle class, educated gay men, old architecture appeals to their interest. During World War II, Treasure Island plays a major role in the war. As a naval training center and major embarkation, servicemen and servicewomen’s sexuality affects their positions. Straight and homosexuals were segregated. As time went on, lesbians and gays were discharged due to their sexual orientation. Settling into San Francisco, the acceptance and openness of the city made San Francisco a city of tolerance. 17% of the city’s population, 115,000 people, were consisted of lesbians and gays. In the 1950s, Victorian houses drew attention from whitecollar gay men and wealthy gay couples. More and more gays and lesbians migrate to the Eureka neighborhood giving it a new social identity.
