At the beginning of the 20th century, unusual and wild characteristics gave San Francisco a reputation as a gay mecca. Homosexuals who took part during World War II lost their positions due to their sexuality. Around 9,000 homosexuals were let loose into San Francisco. Its advocating acts, actions, and gay atmosphere attracts a huge amount of lesbians and gays in the late 1960s. Victorian houses located in Haight that were previously built by early immigrants became possessions to the new gay residents. As drugs and violence play a role in the Haight, a vast majority of homosexuals left for the Castro where Irish- Americans resides for a wealthier life. Such events along with its gay population names The Castro a Gay Mecca expanding the population even greater in the 1970s and 1980s. Unfortunately, such significant events did not make future events pleasing. Mayor George Moscone along with Harvey Milk met their deaths on November 27, 1978 by Dan White who assassinates both of them. A widespread of HIV affects the gay male community in the 1980s. 15% of the current population consists of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders.
